FreeCORE 15.0

Release notes for FreeCORE 15.0.

FreeCORE carries the TrueNAS® CORE 13.3 system forward as an independently maintained operating system on FreeBSD. FreeCORE-15.0-RELEASE is the first stable release.

Base System

• The operating system base is FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE (from FreeBSD 13 in CORE 13.3).

Update Infrastructure

• Updates are downloaded from updates.freecore.org. Each update manifest is signed for the FreeCORE-15.0-STABLE train and verified against certificates included with FreeCORE. The train certificate is issued by the FreeCORE Update CA. See Update Security.

Added

• Security keys (WebAuthn): hardware security keys as a second factor for web interface logins.
• Console login OTP: one-time passwords at local and serial console logins.
• The drm-66-kmod graphics driver for opt-in host GPU rendering, including render nodes that can be shared with jails. It is not loaded automatically, and GPU firmware packages are not included. See Loading DRM Graphics Drivers at Boot.
• rar2fs: a service that presents RAR archives as a read-only filesystem, so their contents can be read and shared without being extracted first.

Changed

• An eligible in-place move from TrueNAS CORE 13.3 captures a persistent return covering the origin boot environment and matching .system and active-iocage state. It does not expire automatically; retained space is visible and removal is manual. Unrelated user datasets are not rewound. Review the migration guide before updating.
• A redesigned web Shell provides an opt-in root terminal and is disabled by default. The jail console, VM serial console, and System Processes use the same terminal transport but remain available independently of the root Shell setting.
• The initial 15.0 release replaced OpenVPN with WireGuard Server and Client. FreeCORE 15.0-U1.4 restores OpenVPN alongside WireGuard. The restoration does not recover configurations removed by earlier FreeCORE versions.

Maintained

• Jails, plugins, and bhyve virtual machines are maintained features. The plugin collection is served from the project's update infrastructure.

Removed

• Vendor telemetry (crash reporting and usage collection) is removed entirely, not just disabled.
• Enterprise-licensed surfaces are removed: High Availability/failover, KMIP, Fibre Channel port management, enclosure management, proactive support, and the TrueCommand integration.
• The unsupported host MinIO server package and the archived minio-client command are removed. The package change does not intentionally clean up MinIO object datasets, but it is not a data or configuration migration. Back up a legacy deployment before upgrading. Cloud Sync S3 transfers continue to use rclone; see MinIO Compatibility.
• Vendor update, support, and analytics endpoints are not contacted.

Identity

• The system identifies as FreeCORE. Open-source license texts and copyright notices are unchanged, and the About dialog credits the project's descent from TrueNAS CORE. Deliberate heritage touches, such as the Retro Logo option, remain.
